AI search vs traditional SEO: what actually changes

If you’ve done SEO, some of your instincts transfer to AI search — and some will quietly mislead you. The fastest way to waste effort on AEO is to assume it’s just SEO with a new name. It isn’t.

What carries over

Clear, accurate product information still wins. Knowing the language your customers use still wins. A fast, well-structured store still helps. The discipline of writing for how people actually search is the part of SEO that matters more than ever.

What doesn’t

Backlinks, domain authority, and keyword-stuffed blog pages do little for an agent that reads your catalog directly. There’s no page-one to climb — an agent returns three to five products and stops. And there’s no second chance below the fold: you’re either in the answer or you’re invisible. Ranking #1 on Google does not mean an agent will surface you.
