How to tell if AI is sending you shoppers

One reason AI shopping sneaks up on merchants: it’s hard to see in your analytics. Referrals from assistants are inconsistent, often stripped, and easy to miss. Here’s how to get a read.

Look for the fingerprints

Watch for referral traffic from assistant domains, sudden direct-traffic landing deep on product pages, and customers who mention they were “recommended” a product. None is conclusive alone, but together they signal agent-driven discovery.

Measurement comes after visibility

There’s a trap here: if agents can’t see your store, there’s no AI traffic to measure — you’d be instrumenting a channel you’re not in. Confirm you’re visible first, then measure. Check your AI visibility →

Make the channel real, then track it

Close your blind spots, get reachable, and the traffic becomes worth instrumenting. Visibility is the input; traffic is the output. Start with the input. The readiness checklist →
