What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the practice of making a store visible to the AI agents that now shop on behalf of people. Where SEO optimised for the ten blue links a human scrolled, AEO optimises for the handful of products an agent picks and puts in front of a buyer who may never see a search page at all.
The shift: from search results to agent picks
When you ask ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity to "find me a merino base layer under $120," the model doesn’t show you a page of results to scan. It queries product catalogs, ranks what it finds, and returns a short list — often three to five items. Everything below that line is invisible. There is no page two. That compression is the whole game: AEO is about being one of the few, not one of the many.
Why it’s different from SEO
Classic SEO rewards backlinks, domain authority and keyword pages. Agent retrieval mostly ignores those. An agent reads a store’s product catalog directly — titles, descriptions, attributes — and matches them to how a shopper phrased the request. A store can rank #1 on Google and be completely absent from an agent’s answer because its product titles don’t say what the shopper asked for. The signals that win are different, so the optimisation is different.
What AEO actually optimises
Three things decide whether an agent surfaces you: (1) whether your catalog is reachable by agents at all; (2) whether your product language matches the intent shoppers express to agents; and (3) how you compare to the other stores answering the same request. The AEO Index measures all three across the live Shopify agent catalog — see the category leaders, or check your own store to find the exact queries where agents stay silent about you.
Why it matters now
Agent-led shopping is early but compounding. Every query an agent answers without your store is a sale that routed elsewhere — and unlike a missed search ranking, you never see the impression. The stores building AEO discipline now are the ones the next generation of shopping assistants will treat as the default answer. Read how agents actually pick products →
