Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), explained for merchants
You don’t need to implement UCP by hand, but you should understand what it is — because it’s the layer that decides whether AI shopping agents can see your store at all.
What it is
UCP is an open standard for how AI agents discover and shop a merchant’s catalog. Instead of every agent scraping every website differently, a store exposes a structured endpoint that any agent can query the same way. It’s the plumbing of agentic commerce.
Why it matters to you
If your store exposes a UCP catalog, agents can read your products, prices and availability directly — you’re shoppable by AI. If it doesn’t, you’re invisible to that whole channel, no matter how good your store is. More on going invisible →
How to check
The fastest way to know where you stand is to test it. Run your store through the checker → — it tells you whether agents can see you, and what they find when they look.
